Chase Hunter has come a long way from the gravel roads of Vanndale, Arkansas, and is now a Kansas-based multidisciplinary artist with a passion for painting large public murals. This passion came to light when he got lost on a long walk and through his wanderings came to the realization that “painting is my contribution to the greater good of society.”
His work can be seen all the way from Las Vegas to Puerto Rico. He painted 17 of the 19 murals in Independence, Kansas. His art has been featured in a Vice documentary (Chase Hunter Birdcage Mural) as well as a PBS special. He obtained his bachelor’s degree of fine arts (BFA), with a concentration in drawing and painting, from Memphis College of Art in 2015. He has recently moved to the area and considers Independence his new home base.
Students will explore the foundations of drawing using black, white, and an earth tone on toned paper. Working with Conte’ pencils, students will practice line variation, composition, and value contrast while learning how light and shadow can create form and depth. This class offers a hands-on introduction to building a strong drawing with a simple, expressive palette. Students will draw a fall scene under Hunter’s guidance.
